BK is one of the many sites assigned to host new housing developments, as part of a national Saudi effort to ensure home ownership. We were commissioned to develop one planning alternative that would respect the MOMRA standards as well as the site’s constraints, such as riverbeds (wadis), volcanic geology and mountainous topography. Our suggested alternative sought to use the central mountains as a landmark landscape feature, visible from all the different accesses to the city and accompanied by resorts and artificial water collection ponds. Residential areas would be distributed around it and its downtown located in the axis between the city’s main vehicular connections to the closest major highway.
